Retro Zero Games

Tech Stack
Overview
Retro Zero Games is a portfolio and content website I built for a client in the gaming space. The site showcases their game projects, articles, and media content with a retro-inspired aesthetic that pays homage to classic gaming while using modern web technologies. Built with Next.js for optimal performance and SEO, styled with Tailwind CSS, and brought to life with Framer Motion animations. The site features a project gallery with filtering, a blog/articles section, smooth scroll-triggered animations, and a responsive layout that works from mobile to ultrawide displays. The retro gaming visual theme is carried throughout with pixel-art inspired accents, CRT-style effects on hover states, and a carefully chosen color palette that evokes nostalgia.
Challenges
- •Balancing the retro gaming aesthetic with modern web UX expectations — the site needed to feel nostalgic but not dated or hard to use
- •Implementing smooth, performant animations with Framer Motion without overloading the page on scroll-heavy sections
- •Optimizing large gaming media assets (screenshots, videos, artwork) for fast page loads without visible quality loss
Solutions
- •Used modern CSS techniques (backdrop-filter, gradient overlays, custom fonts) to create a retro feel while maintaining clean navigation, readable text, and accessible contrast ratios
- •Implemented viewport-based animation triggers with staggered delays and will-change hints, plus reduced motion media query support for accessibility
- •Set up next/image with custom loader configurations for different asset types, WebP conversion, and lazy loading with blur placeholders generated at build time
